چکیده

INTRODUCTION: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the most common non-epidemic bacterial infection in adults and children. Infections to the kidneys and scarring are well established complications of infection of the upper urinary tract in children and can lead to hypertension and renal failure [1]. The reference standard for confirmation of UTI in children is growth of a single organism on a culture of urine obtained by urethralcatheterization/suprapubic aspiration. Escherichia coli is the most common uropathogen causing UTI in children, accounting for up to 78% [2]. However, other pathogens such as Proteus and Klebsiella species, and some Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species may also cause UTI. The culture method has the disadvantage of taking at least 48 hours to give a result. Therefore, more rapid methods are desirable. Currently, the most widely used rapid tests are dipsticks (leukocyte esterase and nitrite). Dipstick tests have the advantage of being quick and easy to perform, however, they are associated with false negative results for bacteria which do not produce nitrite and false positive results in the presence of ascorbic acid, drug interference and overgrowth with nitrite producing bacteria. For routine purposes, the ideal method for microbial characterization would require minimum sample preparation, be rapid, automated and inexpensive. In this study, we have tested if H NMR spectroscopy will be of value in differentiating metabolite profiles of urine samples with and without UTI.

Investigating the Effect of Zinc Deficiency on the Risk of Urinary Tract Infection in Children

Background Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is a common infectious disease among children. Deficiency in micronutrients such as zinc, is believed to play a role in predisposing children to UTI. However, rare studies have been conducted on this subject. The present study aimedto compare the serum zinc level between children with UTI and normal cont...

The Detection of Fimbrial Pathogenic Genes in E. coli Strains Isolated from Patients with Urinary Tract Infection

Abstract Bachground and objectives: The ability of adherence to the surface of host cell is very critical in the colonization of microbial pathogens. It has been revealed that E. coli strains that infect urinary tracts have different fimbrea such as I, S, FIC, Dr, and fimbrial adhesions. Material and Methods: In this study, 363 urine samples were obtained from patients with urinary tract infect...

Correlation of prenatal vitamin D deficiency and neonatal urinary tract infection

Background: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is a common infection during pregnancy and different age groups of children, including the neonatal period. It comprises 1/3 of bacterial infections in newborn infants, with a prevalence of 0.1-1% in term and 4-25% in preterm neonates. UTI occurs more commonly in male neonates (M/F: 2-6/1) for the higher incidence of structural abnormalities (1,2). Urin...

Antibiotic Resistance Pattern of Bacteria Causing Urinary Tract Infections in Children of Fasa During the years 2012 and 2014

Background & Objectives: Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is one of the most prevalent bacterial infection in children. Awareness of the antibiotic resistance of common bacteria causing UTI in each area has a large impact on infection improvement. The objective of this study is to evaluate the antibiotic resistance of bacteria causing UTI in two to 15 years old children referring to Fasa Vali-e-A...
